ATSC 3.0/NEXTGEN TV Is Launching in Rochester, NY

Scroll down to the bottom for recent updates

Rochester, NY is FINALLY transitioning to ATSC 3.0 on March 23, 2023. The lighthouse will use WUHF which is on RF channel 28.

Sinclair has not yet filed with the FCC, so details at this time are limited. What channels are going to be apart of the lighthouse are also unknown at this time.

The logistics of this ATSC 3.0 launch are going to be crazy. Due to this transition, Rochester will experience a significant drop in bitrate. WHAM already has 2 HD channels and if Sinclair is modeling Rochester on Buffalo and other cities, WHAM would carry FOX Rochester, for 3 HD and 2 SD channels sharing the same space. I’m guessing Nexstar will carry a sub on WROC, and Hubbard’s WHEC would be packed with it’s 8th sub. This leaves 1 sub on the table and only WXXI as the last full power station, and I highly doubt they will be apart of the lighthouse. I’m guessing this is why it’s took Sinclair so long to transition.
